Chapter 12

Shar

“I told you I would need to go back, darling. Why are you making such a big deal about this?” I ran my hand over the stubble that had grown in on Haskell’s chin over the last few days. I wanted him to shave it more than anything but knew he’d been a bit preoccupied. Cordelia showing up at Kaira’s house had been a lucky break. One we all needed.

His eyes were downcast. He hadn’t looked at me since I suggested going back to Epicura. “I can’t protect you there.” His voice was low, and I heard the worry behind his words.

“Darling, I’ll be fine. You know I’m always fine.” I kept stroking my thumb over his cheek. Haskell had made the trip over last night when I called him. I needed him relaxed before I sprung my news on him. “I need to go back and speak with Moria. She’s the only one who can help us with Bethany. I made an opening last time, now I need to solidify our arrangement before anything else happens.” I paused, dropping my hand from his face. “You know how unpredictable Bethany can be. We don’t know what she’s doing or what her and Morrigan are planning. We need more Gods on our side. Who better than Bethany’s own sister?” I shifted in the bed and dropped my feet to the floor. I needed to get ready to go. He needed to understand why I was doing this, but I wouldn’t wait for him to decide. I was leaving, soon.

Moria had left the message that she would be in contact. I’d received a fire message last night asking me to return to Epicura today. I was not going to lose this chance with her. I felt the warm press of Haskell’s body against my bare back. “I just don’t like not being able to protect you. I can’t even communicate with you over there.” He pressed his lips to my shoulder. “The last devices I sent you with went dark the minute you were in the other realm. My technology doesn’t work with the magic there.” His voice lowered. “What if something happens to you while you’re there? No one will know.”

I turned my head to look back at him. “You have to trust that I know what I’m doing, and I can take care of myself.”

“I do trust you. But the thought of losing you kills me.” His voice was ragged. “You won’t even consider Alexis coming with you again.”

“Haskell, we’ve talked about this. She has more of a temper than I do. Her last outburst could have gotten us both killed. I can’t risk her having another one. Not with Moria. She’s got a short temper of her own and could whisk us out of existence if she wanted. She is the oldest of the three and much wiser when it comes to using magic.” I shivered at even the thought of angering her.

I felt his deep exhale push across my back.
